Dr. Randel M. Price, Chemical & Biochemical Engineering Chair, at Christian Brothers University (CBU) was awarded the Region III Outstanding Faculty Advisor for the state of Tennessee by the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA). Also honored by NACADA was Dr. James T. Allen, Assistant Professor, Management/Marketing/Economics, who received the Certificate of Merit of Faculty Academic Advising. The awards were presented at the Region III Conference recently held in Greenville, South Carolina.

Well respected by students and faculty, both Price and Allen extend their efforts beyond the classroom. These educators exemplify what it means to serve as a resource to students seeking to pursue their educational goals.  “As an academic advisor you have the opportunity to focus on the individual student and these interactions are often the most rewarding,” says Price. “When I consider the amazing job my CBU colleagues do at advising, it’s a bit intimidating to think that I’m the one receiving an award!”

As recipients of these NACADA awards, their commitment to higher education and the long-term success of CBU students is celebrated and serves as a testimony of their efforts. “Academic advising is possibly the most rewarding aspect of my job as it is typically the only time where one-on-one mentoring takes place,” states Allen  “Receiving this award from NACADA means a lot to me; it’s nice to know that people recognize the dedication I have toward guiding students through their college experience.”

NACADA, started in 1977, promotes and supports quality academic advising in institutions of higher education to enhance the educational development of students. It is comprised of 10,000 members representing all 50 states, Puerto Rico, Canada and several other international countries. Members represent higher education institutions across the spectrum of Carnegie classifications and include professional advisors/counselors, faculty, administrators and students whose responsibilities include academic advising.

First White Coat Ceremony in Memphis

The Master of Physician Assistant Studies Program at Christian Brothers University (CBU) made history on May 4 in the University Theater when it coated its first cohort, marking a rite of passage for the students from didactic classroom and lab instruction to practical clinical training. Not only was this the inaugural PA White Coat Ceremony at CBU but it marks the first ever in Memphis.

In all 31 members of the Class of 2014 were proudly given the traditional student consultative White Coat made possible through the generous support of dedicated, anonymous donors.  “This was a monumental event for CBU and the Memphis community which was evidenced by the number of individuals who joined us for the event,” stated Dr. Mark Scott, Director of the Physician Assistant Studies Program. “The support of the program by physicians and individuals has been overwhelming and is reflective of the University’s impact on this community.  We embrace the phrase, ‘Enter to Learn.  Leave to Serve’, and are committed to the tenets of the PA profession and needs of our community.”

The White Coat Ceremony itself was started by Dr. Arnold P. Gold at Columbia University’s College of Physicians And Surgeons in 1993 and has since been adopted at many Health Professional Schools across the Nation. By having a ceremony where entering students are “cloaked” with their very first white lab coat, particular attention is called to the individual’s choice to become a Health Sciences Educator, Physician Assistant, or Physical Therapist, and of equal importance, bringing to focus the true meaning of that choice – that one must cure, but also care.

Physician Assistants are licensed to practice medicine, issue prescriptions, and practice in all medical fields including primary care, internal medicine and subspecialties, as well as surgical and emergency care. The PA’s scope of practice may also include education, research, and administrative services. The Beverly and Sam Ross Gallery at Christian Brothers University (CBU) is proud to be one of four local galleries and museums featuring the area-wide exhibit “Celebrating Carroll Cloar.” The exhibition of 26 drawings, “Crossing Place,” at the CBU Gallery begins May 31 and runs through July 26.

Much of Cloar’s art is inspired by his childhood memories of growing up in Arkansas. Often described as “magic realism,” the work of Cloar features images of churches, open fields, old schoolhouses and individuals that portray haunting motifs of American life. This exhibit will showcase Cloar’s use of flat color forms and ornate patterns that were instrumental in developing his signature style and gaining him national recognition. Through the use of various art forms and ominous patterning, Cloar’s work demonstrates magnificent range that tackles the strongest themes of human emotion timelessly.

Born in Earle, Arkansas, Cloar was raised on a farm before coming to Memphis to attend Southwestern University. He also studied at the Memphis Academy of Art and the Art Students League in New York. During this time, Cloar produced a series of lithographs based upon the landscape and community earning him the McDowell Traveling Fellowship. While on Fellowship, Cloar explored the west coast and Mexico. At the start of World War II, he joined the Army Air Corps. Post World War II, Cloar’s unique work depicting landscapes of Arkansas earned him the Guggenheim Fellowship, which he used to travel around Central and South America before permanently settling in Memphis. A renowned artist, Cloar’s work was chosen to be among six paintings by American artists commemorating President Bill Clinton’s inauguration. Although Cloar died in 1993, his work remains revered for the authenticity of its style and subject.

This exhibit is free and open to the public. Hours at the Beverly & Sam Ross Gallery are Monday-Thursday, 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.; Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; and Sunday, 1:00-5:00 p.m. Hours may vary due to university schedules.
